Night Driving Lessons

Evening lessons for learners working towards their 20 night hours. Headlight glare, judging distance in the dark, and unlit roads.

If you're under 25, 20 of your 120 logbook hours have to be at night hours. Most learners leave them until late and then try to cram them in, which is the wrong way around - night driving is harder than daytime driving, and the point of the requirement is practice, not box-ticking.

Driving in the dark is a different skill. You lose most of the visual cues you've been relying on without noticing you were relying on them.

What changes after dark

  • Judging distance and speed — depth perception drops sharply at night. Gaps at intersections and roundabouts are harder to read.

  • Oncoming headlights — glare, and how long your eyes take to recover from it.

  • High and low beam — when to switch, and the legal distances for dipping.

  • Unlit roads — many parts of the north-west have no/less street lighting once you're off the main roads.

  • Reading the road — reflective markers, unlit signs, and spotting a curve before you're in it.

  • Pedestrians and cyclists — in dark clothing, where you'd normally see them easily.

  • Fatigue — recognising when you're too tired to be driving well.

Where night lessons go

We use a mix deliberately: lit suburban streets to start, then unlit back roads, then a stretch of motorway or arterial at speed. The contrast is the lesson — most learners are surprised by how different an unlit road feels after twenty minutes under streetlights.

How night hours are recorded

Night driving in NSW means between sunset and sunrise. Every night lesson is signed off at the end.

The 3-for-1 bonus still applies to a night lesson, with one catch worth understanding: only the hour you actually drive counts towards your 20 night hours. The two bonus hours are recorded as daytime driving.

So night lessons are useful for both type of logbook hours (i.e., usual day hours and night hours) at once — but you can't reach 20 night hours on lessons alone. Most of them will come from driving with a parent or supervisor, and these lessons are there to make that practice safer and more useful.

When night lessons run

This depends on the time of year, since it has to actually be dark. Through the cooler months, evening lessons from around 5pm onwards work well. In midsummer it isn't dark until close to 8pm, so night lessons are limited — if you're planning your 20 hours, it pays to get them done outside the peak of summer.

The goal is not just clearing the test. The goal is to drive around safely.

Worth doing even if you're exempt

If you're 25 or over you have no logbook requirement, and no obligation to practise at night. It's still the driving most new drivers find hardest, and the first solo night drive is not the ideal place to learn it.
